CD Review: Rob Levit Trio- Uncertain Path
Label: Symbol System Music 2004 Uncertain Path is a program of mostly originals from the prolific guitarist and composer Rob Levit. His compositions range from the technically complex to the simply beautiful, from odd meter jazz to blistering backbeat rock feels, and seemingly all points in between. His interpretations of the music of others (Bob Marley, Sting, Wayne Shorter) are by turns poignant and incendiary. The trio, one of many Levit projects, works as a compatible unit, subtle, supportive, and well rehearsed.
A big third of this outfit is DC area drummer, Frank Russo, who not too long ago was playing traps in a US Navy Band. Russo’s high hat grooves, expertly played and well recorded, add color to the rock and funk feels. His all round facility on the set has him sailing through all the meter changes with easy abandon. His contribution to Wayne Shorter’s Footprints is a groove so deep you could twist an ankle in it; His minimalist approach to Bob Marley’s Waiting in Vain the most subtle and effective jazz treatment of a reggae feel I’ve ever heard. Bassist Amy Shook, who joined Levit’s trio about a year ago brings a great tone, solid support and a lyrical solo voice to the program. Levit is an artist keenly attuned to spiritual development and its application to musical performance. As a result of this spiritual focus his music is appealingly devoid of egotism, his band a democracy in which all the votes get counted. Among his other endeavors are an eclectic flute and guitar duo, a folk-jazz fusion group, and a larger ensemble for original jazz compositions. Additionally, Levit is a painter, a poet, and a workshop presenter on the subject of artistry and creativity. He is artist in residence at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, Maryland. Prior to that he worked with children with learning differences at The Summit School in nearby Edgewater. He has played major jazz clubs and festivals in the US and Canada. For additional information about the artist or to purchase CDs visit www.roblevit.com .
