In those first surreal days that dragged by following the Hurricane Katrina disaster two years ago, many of us far from the Gulf Coast watched and wondered what would become of the fabled and beloved city called New Orleans.  As we looked into the pained faces of the city’s poor and infirm on CNN, we were assured that help was on the way; yet even today much of what was once a vibrant historical landmark and proud home to so many is incomplete or forever changed. One thing that appears to have bounced back with a renewed vitality is New Orleans’ signature music and the support of its fans the world over.  In the spirit of the benevolent societies of old, the music of New Orleans is playing a big part in the revitalization efforts of the city.

Putumayo World Music recently released the fourth in a series of New Orleans theme CDs, this one with a focus on brass band tradition in its most recent modern evolution. The styles of the Crescent City are all represented here, from parade standards to gospel tunes to 50's style R&B, firmly rooted in tradition, yet ready to make their mark on the 21st century. Putumayo has presented here an inspired showcase of New Orleans musicianship, along with a music video that beckons the viewer to head down once again to experience all that is great about this jewel of a city.

A portion of the proceeds from New Orleans Brass is being donated to Preservation Hall’s Renew Our Music Fund which provides financial assistance to the city’s dispossessed musicians, and helps revitalize a truly one-of-a-kind musical culture.  Do yourself and New Orleans a good turn and check out New Orleans Brass.
